Reflection in Organizations Without Surveillance
Organizational reflection only works when people are certain their reflections are not being read.

Organizations frequently ask people to reflect and then, without meaning to, make the reflection feel monitored. The moment that happens, honest reflection stops and performance begins.
The boundary has to be explicit and it has to hold. Individual reflections are not routed to managers, are not part of evaluation, and are not used to assess performance.
What an organization can learn from is the pattern people choose to share, and the conversations that reflection makes possible afterward.
HeadCheck is not an employee monitoring system. Used well, it is a way of giving people room to think before they are asked to speak.
Pause and Reflect
Would people in your organization believe that a reflection was genuinely private?
Carry It Into Practice
State the privacy boundary out loud before introducing any reflection practice to a team.
